Objectives In Mind

The Gambia has created hope and expectations for fundamental change to improve the quality of life of all Gambians in a sustainable and inclusive manner. In response to this new context, the Government recently launched the National Development Plan (NDP) 2018 to 2021, which provides the blueprint for the transitional development agenda. In addition, key stakeholders such as the youth, the private sector, women’s groups, and community organizations, are mobilizing to play their respective part in furthering the implementation of this agenda in an inclusive and transparent manner. It is against this backdrop that this networking event is being organized. The specific objectives of the event are as follows:-

a. Provide a platform for different stakeholders such as government officials, youth groups, NGO’s, the private sector, entrepreneurs and community activists who can come together to network and share experiences.....
and also exchange ideas on how to effectively contribute to the implementation of the national development plan.
b. Inspire the youth, the physically disabled, and other vulnerable groups, and give them a platform to engage & play a role in the Gambia, whilst at the same time exposing them to opportunities for career growth/development through a job fair.
c. Have in depth discussions on housing development and the role played by the real estate industry in the Gambia.
d. Promote and Market TAF Africa Global projects and share information on the TAF Africa Foundation.

Issues at hand

The conference is an opportunity for networking and knowledge sharing. It also addresses issues related to the transitional and the long-term development agenda for The Gambia. Thus, the conference agenda has been designed to focus on a number of policy and strategy issues, including an update on the implementation of the NDP. It is envisaged that the presentations, discussions and recommendations, will address the role of the different stakeholder groups such as the youth, women groups, and the private sector in this process. The transition programme is intended to lay the foundation for transforming The Gambia, and offers a number of opportunities for doing so. However, challenges exist which will require attention as a matter of priority, if meaningful progress is to be made. The opportunities and challenges include the following:-

i) The country is currently facing acute capacity constraints. It is therefore imperative that investments be made in The Gambia’s human and social capital to strengthen institutions for effective delivery and broader citizen participation....
What are the short to medium term strategies/plans that should be put in place in response to prevailing issues? What role can the Gambian Diaspora play, and what other concrete partnerships can we forge?
ii) There is a fast-growing youth bulge today in The Gambia, who are largely urban based and digitally involved. Unleashing the potential of this youth group to develop entrepreneurship, nurture innovation, ....
and leverage on new technologies to attract relevant quality will deliver significant added value for government in its drive to build a more sustainable and inclusive Gambia.
iii) The role of government as primary provider of basic social protection must be a joint agenda that draws interest from all members of Gambian society to foster cohesion. How can Gambians demand and support a very robust and transparent reform....
agenda that is both timely and offers the right incentives to the various stakeholders for greater efficiency.
iv) Social cohesion will need to be maintained if meaningful progress is to be made in the transition and transformation process. Advocacy, outreach, and communication have an important role to play, and with social media use today in The Gambia at....
an all-time high, there are tangible opportunities to be exploited.
v) The real estate industry is currently expanding rapidly and it is critical its growth and expansion be properly channeled and managed. The expansion is largely private sector driven and to a large extent unregulated, ....
Thus, to avoid unintended consequences and indeed ensure the sector “does no harm”, there is the need for careful review and indeed enactment of some regulations without stifling initiative to protect Gambians....
Solutions should aim at maximizing the potential of this sector and more importantly bring its practices and processes in line with current global trends on sustainable housing.
vi) Youth employment, an integral part of the proceedings will be complimented through the job fair. Discussions will be facilitated between potential employers and the youth to showcase.....
employment, internships, and training opportunities, and scholarships for the latter.
